About: Commanding a splendid view south towards Alfred’s Tower on the wooded ridge above Stourhead , Marston House is one of the west Country’s largest but least known country houses. From a now invisible Jacobean nucleus, under the Earls of Cork and Orrery it grew like topsy until it achieved a frontage of 365 feet. In the 1720s and 1730s the important garden designer Stephen Switzer (who promoted what he called a ‘natural and rural way of gardens’ ) was engaged in creating a semi-formal layout , most of which was later converted into a landscape park with lake (probably in the 18202 and 1830s under the direction of William Sawrey Gilpin)

Tickets will be availble from 10 April
